About Biddeford, Maine

Biddeford has a population of 21,000 and is Maine’s 7th largest city. It is conveniently located along the I-95 corridor, only 20 minutes from Portland and an hour and a half from Boston. The city is bounded to the north by the Saco River and if you follow the river for a few miles out to the ocean, you’ll find a magnificent coastline with two miles of sandy beaches and beautiful tidal pools. Whether you relax in the sun or join the local surfers out riding a wave, Fortune Rock’s beach will not disappoint! Prominent spots to visit along the coast include the historic Wood Island Lighthouse, lighting Saco Bay since 1806, and places to explore like the Timber Point Trail along the Rachel Carson U.S. Wildlife Preserve and the East Point Audubon Sanctuary. Biddeford’s vast woodland landscapes can be explored through publicly accessible trails such as Clifford Park’s 140-acre trail system and the Blandings Park Wildlife Sanctuary.

Biddeford’s downtown area is urban in its density and fabric, with numerous historic commercial buildings, churches, brick mill buildings, and homes. The old textile mills are thriving again, revitalized as a mixed-use campus of residential apartments and diverse commercial spaces. The Pepperell Mill Campus is continuing to grow and evolve thanks to innovative entrepreneurs that have made it their own.

The downtown’s growing arts and cultural community is anchored by the beautiful and historic City Theater, which first opened in 1896. Today, City Theater is home to five major community theater projects each year from October to August and features concerts, films, plays, and performing artists throughout the year. Foodies will be right at home downtown, too. With a variety of cuisines from quick bites to gourmet meals, as well as craft breweries serving local beverages, Biddeford’s downtown restaurant scene has something for everyone!
