About Westbrook, Maine

Tucked neatly between Portland, Gorham, and Windham; Westbrook is a friendly place for all who want to live in such a peaceful atmosphere. This welcoming downtown area features distinctively styled buildings bordering the Presumpscot River as it weaves through the city while small parks scatter across the location. With an extensive history rooted from being a mill town just like Saco & Biddeford, this pleasingly vibrant city has transformed into an artistic haven where many are planting their roots thanks to lower property prices than found in other areas nearby.

Now an up-and-coming suburb of the neighboring Portland, Westbrook has a thriving economy and an ever-growing downtown section. IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., a large multinational company, have set up their headquarters here. The city is also home to SAPPI LTD’s Westbrook Paper Mill which provides employment for around 300 people – previously it had been one of the town’s biggest employers when it employed over 3,000 workers but eventually the workforce and production decreased as a result of the age of the mill and outside competition. Idexx Laboratories has since surpassed the mill as the city’s largest taxpayer. 

Westbrook attracted worldwide attention when a rotating ice disk, 100 yards in diameter (the length of a football field) appeared on the Maine river in January 2019. A team of physicists theorized disks like this form as a result of a current and vortex under the ice. Ice sheets begin to spin and then form into circles. The disk partially formed again in 2020 but has not attracted as much attention as its initial appearance in 2019.
