About South Portland, Maine

South Portland is a lively city on the coast of Maine and borders Portland. Surrounded by water on all sides and dotted with historic landmarks like Fort Gorges – it can’t get much better than this! Whether you enjoy an evening at the coffee shop or explore our bustling downtown area during a morning stroll down Cottage Road or Broadway Avenue you’ll see what I mean! And while you’re here don’t forget to try out some of our local seafood favorites like lobster rolls or fish tacos!

The city’s economy isn’t just suburban – with a strong focus on the working waterfront, manufacturing and other industries. Home to the Portland-Montreal Pipe Line, millions of barrels of oil are shipped to South Portland each year, which is a major portion of the inbound tonnage entering the Port of Portland. It is the northernmost oil port in the United States, and has over 120 oil storage tanks. South Portland is also home to one of the largest rail yards in New England, RigbyYard.   Another key point of the economy is The Maine Mall which is the largest and busiest mall in the state and attracts thousands of shoppers each year. It encompasses about 20 different stores including Macy’s and JCPenney – we’ll cater to your every need.

South Portland boasts a number of parks and open areas. One of the more prominent features of this picturesque town is the historic Greenbelt Walkway, which is perfect for those who are looking for a scenic route down south to explore. Winding its way through residential areas and offering breathtaking views of the harbor, this well-maintained path spans 3 miles long across many neighborhoods. A variety of outdoor activities await you along the trail – from biking to picnicking – but one popular spot is Mill Creek Park, located in downtown South Portland. This scenic green space offers plenty to see and do – from hosting community events such as summer concerts, art fairs, holiday tree lightings, ice skating during winter months – it’s no wonder why locals flock here day after day! South Portland is a favorite destination for Mainers.
